E-commerce SEO: your category pages are the asset

E-commerce SEO makes your product and category pages visible for the searches that lead to purchases. For most Indian online stores, the largest untapped opportunity is not new content — it is the category pages they already have, which are usually thin, unoptimised and outranked by marketplaces.

How your customers search

What people actually type before they contact you

This is where generic SEO advice falls apart. Get the intent wrong and you rank for words nobody who buys from you ever uses.

Category searches carry the volume

“Cotton kurta sets for women” produces far more traffic than any single product name — and it lands on a category page that most stores have left empty apart from a product grid.

Modifiers reveal intent

“Under ₹2000”, “for oily skin”, “for small bedrooms” — these qualifiers indicate someone close to buying, and they map to pages most stores have never built.

Marketplaces own the head

Amazon and Flipkart take the generic terms. Brands win on brand-plus-product, on specific attributes, and on the content marketplaces cannot be bothered to write.

Research before purchase

“How to choose”, “which is better”, size and care guides — top-funnel content that feeds remarketing audiences and earns the links your product pages never will.

What makes this hard

The problems specific to your sector

None of these are unsolvable. All of them are ignored by an agency running the same playbook for every client.

  • Thousands of URLs, most of which are never crawled properly
  • Faceted navigation generating near-infinite duplicate pages and wasting crawl budget
  • Out-of-stock and discontinued products handled by deletion, destroying accumulated authority
  • Rising Meta and Google acquisition costs squeezing margins with no organic base to fall back on
Our approach

What we do differently for e-commerce

  1. Fix crawl and index efficiency first

Faceted navigation controlled, parameters handled, duplicates canonicalised, and crawl budget directed at pages that can actually earn money.

  2. Turn category pages into real pages

Genuine copy, buying guidance, internal links and FAQs on the categories with commercial value. This is consistently the highest-return work in e-commerce SEO.

  3. Product page fundamentals at scale

Unique titles and descriptions, Product and Review schema, image optimisation, and templates that hold up across thousands of SKUs.

  4. Handle lifecycle properly

A defined policy for out-of-stock and discontinued products — redirect, keep, or replace — so authority is retained rather than deleted.

  5. Connect organic and paid

Shopping feed optimisation and Meta campaigns running alongside, with blended customer acquisition cost as the number we actually report on.

Timing

When demand actually happens

Indian retail demand concentrates sharply around the festive quarter — Onam, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri, Durga Puja, Diwali — plus the end-of-season and Republic Day sale periods. Content, category pages and campaigns need to be indexed and ranking well before the festive window opens, not launched inside it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a D2C brand outrank Amazon and Flipkart?

Not for generic head terms — do not spend budget trying. You can win decisively on your brand terms, on specific attribute searches, and on the guides and comparison content marketplaces have no incentive to write. Those searches convert better and cost nothing per click.

We are on Shopify. Is that a problem for SEO?

No. Shopify has known quirks — forced URL structures, limited control over collection filters — but nothing that blocks strong SEO. We work within them. WooCommerce offers more control and requires more maintenance.

What should we do with out-of-stock products?

If it is returning, keep the page live and show alternatives. If it is gone for good, redirect it to the closest equivalent or the parent category. Deleting it and serving a 404 throws away every link and ranking signal that page had earned.

How does SEO compare to Meta ads for a D2C brand?

Meta buys demand and stops the moment you stop paying. SEO takes 4–6 months and then reduces your blended acquisition cost permanently. The healthy pattern is paid for growth and testing, organic for margin. We run both, so we can tell you honestly where the next rupee is best spent.

Do we need blog content for an online store?

Only where it serves a real search — buying guides, sizing, care, comparisons. Generic lifestyle blogging on an e-commerce site is usually wasted effort.
