SEO for law firms, advocates and consultants
Legal and professional services SEO builds visibility for firms whose advertising is restricted. For advocates in India, the Bar Council rules limit promotional activity — but informational content, a website, and accurate directory listings are permitted, and that is where the entire opportunity sits.
What people actually type before they contact you
This is where generic SEO advice falls apart. Get the intent wrong and you rank for words nobody who buys from you ever uses.
Problem first, lawyer second
“Notice period not served company sending legal notice” comes before “employment lawyer”. Educational content captures people at the moment the problem appears.
Practice area plus location
“Property lawyer in Bangalore”, “GST consultant near me” — the highest-intent legal searches are specific about both specialism and place.
Heavy credential checking
Prospective clients read profiles, qualifications, reported matters and reviews before making contact. Anonymous or thin firm websites lose them.
Urgency splits the market
Some legal searches are emergencies decided in minutes; others are researched for weeks. The content strategy differs sharply between the two.
The problems specific to your sector
None of these are unsolvable. All of them are ignored by an agency running the same playbook for every client.
- Bar Council of India rules restrict advertising and solicitation by advocates
- Competitors who ignore the rules and appear to face no consequence
- Legal content is YMYL, so accuracy and authorship are scrutinised heavily
- Lawyers are time-poor, so content programmes stall without a light-touch process
What we do differently for legal
-
Work strictly within the advertising rules
Informational content, factual firm and advocate profiles, and accurate directory listings. No solicitation copy, no promises about outcomes, no comparative superiority claims.
-
Build genuine practice area pages
One substantive page per practice area, explaining the area of law factually — informative rather than promotional, which is both compliant and what ranks.
-
Publish problem-stage content
Plain-language explanations of common legal situations. This is permitted, genuinely useful, and captures people before they search for a firm.
-
Make expertise verifiable
Advocate profiles with enrolment details, qualifications, practice areas and publications, marked up so search engines can read the credentials.
-
Local visibility
Google Business Profile and locality pages, which carry most of the enquiry volume for firms serving a defined area.
Bar Council of India rules — where the line actually is
Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules restricts advertising and solicitation by advocates. A website with factual information about the firm, its advocates and their practice areas is permitted, as are accurate directory entries. What is not permitted is soliciting work, promising outcomes, claiming superiority over other advocates, or promotional puffery. We write to that standard by default, and we will tell you when something you have asked for falls the wrong side of it. Non-advocate professional services — consultants, HR and recruitment firms, corporate service providers — are not bound by these rules and have far more latitude.
What we’d typically run for you
The mix differs by business. The audit tells us which of these to start with, and in what order.
Local SEO
You can be page-one on Google and still invisible in the map pack that gets the calls.
On-Page SEO
Most sites we audit lose more traffic to fixable on-page problems than to any competitor.
Link Building
If you would not be happy to be seen on it, we do not build a link on it.
Website Audits
Not a 60-page tool export. Three things that matter, in order.
Social Media Advertisements
Reach is a diagnostic, not a result. We optimise for cost per enquiry.
Google Advertisements
Management fee separate from ad spend. You own the account. Always.
Frequently asked questions
Are law firms allowed to do SEO in India?
Advocates may maintain an informational website and accurate directory listings. Bar Council Rule 36 restricts advertising and solicitation, so the work has to be built on genuinely informational content rather than promotional copy. Within that boundary, SEO is both permitted and effective.
Our competitors clearly advertise. Why should we not?
Some firms do operate outside the rules. That is a professional-conduct risk you would be taking on, not us, and we will not write copy that creates it for you. The compliant approach — deep informational content — is also what performs best in a category Google scrutinises heavily.
Does this apply to consultants and recruiters too?
No. The Bar Council rules bind advocates only. HR agencies, recruitment firms, management consultants and corporate service providers can market normally, and we run a much more direct strategy for them.
Who writes legal content?
We draft it; your advocate reviews and approves it, and is credited. Legal content is YMYL, so unattributed or inaccurate content will not rank and creates professional risk.
Is local SEO important for a law firm?
Very. “Lawyer near me” and practice-area-plus-locality searches drive most enquiry volume for firms serving a defined geography, and the map pack takes the majority of those clicks.
